Waiting to Dance
This piece is inspired by my love for the culture and spirit of Native Americans, and is a tribute to the dancers of the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. I grew up with these folks, and had snowball fights with them in the ruins of their ancestors. During the Summer, they would share their skill and steps and songs with the tourists at the Penny Arcade. The boy in this piece is a compilation of many tribes, as symbolized by the quilted shapes in the background that are associated with various peoples. He waits patiently for his chance to honor his ancestors; to share a part of his culture; he is anxious, excited, scared and proud. Entirely machine pieced, not applique.
